Since Chinese New Year’s just around the corner, we’ve decided to head up to London on 29th Jan 2011 (Saturday) for some festive cheer, shopping & a really yummy CNY dinner!

CNY Carnival 2011

Our fellow Singaporeans from the London universities have organized a massive CNY carnival, which takes place that very day from 1100 – 1500 at University College London, North and South Cloisters, Gower Street, WC1E 6BT. Apart from lots of stalls selling traditional delights (including familiar flavours from home), other festivities include yusheng, an orchestra performance and even a lucky draw with prizes to be won! So don’t miss this opportunity to meet up with your friends from London, as well as those who are travelling from the other parts of UK, and spread the festive cheer.

We hope everyone's keeping warm & surviving in this awful weather! Just so no one feels lonely nearing the festive (not to mention realllyyy cold) season, we've made a booking at TGIFriday's for Singsoc's Annual Christmas Dinner Party on 14 Dec (Tuesday), just before everyone flies off! :)

We've fought realllyyy hard with all the other societies to get this booking, so we hope you'll all appreciate it & come join us for the company, warmth & a yummy 3-course meal! The SingSoc Committee 2010/2011 is proud to announce that our Welcome Party will be held on 23 Oct 2010. This year, we're having a Quiz & Buffet Night! [edit: The Welcome party has been moved 2 hours earlier to 6pm (due to SUSU's generous attitude in accommodating to multiple societies simultaneously, but no matter!). As such, to compromise for both the early and late diners in our community, we decided to have a finger food buffet instead.]

SingSoc Social: Portsmouth!

To kick off the year, we’ll be holding our first social this coming Saturday (9th Oct): PORTSMOUTH (SHOPPING) TRIP!

For those who haven’t been there (especially Freshers), Gunwharf Quays @ Portsmouth houses factory outlet stores of many high-street brands like FCUK, Paul Smith, Fred Perry, Karen Miller, Ted Baker, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein (Underwear), Burberry, Adidas, Nike, Oakley, Levi’s etc. There’s a makeup store housing major brands like Bobbi Brown, MAC etc., and best of all, there are over 30% in discounts across all these shops!

Notts Games 2009 is history.

Hey!

I hope all of you who went for Notts had great fun! For those who weren't there, here is an update of what happened.

Disclaimer: The below mentioned views are purely personal and if there is any error in facts, please let me know!

Basketball - Although we had only 6 players in the team (with only 1 substitute), our basketball team fought bravely in all qualifying matches. In one of the games, the guys trashed the opponents with a convincing win. The team had to rely heavily on speed and had tremendous obstacles to overcome (due to strong-built opponents). They persevered in all their games but were unable to succeed through the semi finals. However, with a more complete team, the team is confident to put up a better fight in the upcoming Mini Asian Games in Sem 2!

Badminton - Our SingSoc badminton 'exponents' participated in men's singles, women's singles and mixed doubles. The tournament for singles were highly competitive and intensive. Despite that, our players played their hearts out and fought convincingly. Eventually, we emerged in 3rd position for women's singles. As for mixed doubles, we had the privilege of 2 mixed doubles pairs! With their experience and skills, I am privileged to announce that they emerged champions and 1st runners-up!

Netball - The team had a full strength of 11, and all 11 eleven girls have done the team proud. Despite the bad weather conditions, the girls all fought on persistently with a great attitude in all the qualifying matches. In the first match, the girls took home a 10-0 win, but due to our disadvantage in builds and height as well as unforeseen circumstances (i.e. kayu referee), we were unable to succeed through to the semi-finals. Nevertheless, the girls’ great sportsmanship and teamwork is indeed something worth giving each other a ‘pat on the back’ for. - Tze Wan

Football - In the qualifying stage, the team of 9 cruised through the matches with 3 convincing wins, scoring 9 goals. Unfazed by a strong/aggressive opponents in the quarter-finals, the team fought with great sportsmanship and perseverance. Although the SingSoc football team were trailing for most of the match, they were undeterred and continued to fight on in the cold. However, the team were edged out narrowly in a highly intensive and exciting match with 8 goals scored in total. Well played and good fight, guys!

Poker - Our one and only poker player did SingSoc proud in the Poker Tournament. With his wit and experience (some say Facebook), he outplayed numerous experienced players and emerged 2nd runner-up!

Medals or not, I can proudly say that all the players are victors. Because all of you took the time and effort to train. You guys played your hearts out on that day. Winning was a bonus. More importantly, we had fun competing and supporting one another! (Kudos to our 'specialised' supporters too!!)

Also, I believe there is a Mini-Asian Games (Asian societies in Southampton competing with one another in various sports) coming up in Semester 2. So that's another chance to show SingSoc's prowess in sports and an opportunity for our members to cheer our athletes in Southampton!

And if you weren't part of the teams who participated in Notts Games, fret not. Because we WANT more people to join and you're more than welcome to play (leisurely)! So.. let's continue to have some fun and to keep fit during the weekends!

Lastly.. our next event is Christmas Dinner (before Winter Holidays start..) It will be on Saturday, 5th Dec! So please check out your inbox.. more details will be given soon.

Nottingham Games Final Update!

Nottingham Games is coming this Saturday! There are some major changes to the coach timings. So, please kindly READ!

Final Details:

Date: 14th November 2009 (Saturday)

Departure Time from Southampton: 5.00am at Highfield Interchange
OR 5.15am Montefiore Halls Reception

(Note: we have to reach Nottingham early and the journey will take 3-4 hours).

Return Time from Nottingham: 9.30pm at Nottingham University Sports Centre

As the registration starts at 10.00am and the various games commence only at 10.30am, we strongly encourage everyone to have a good breakfast! And if you have not ordered packed lunches from Nottingham, please bring your own lunches because cafes on campus are closed on Saturdays and the nearest town (Beeston) is 20 minutes away by foot.

For sports players, your team captains will update you about the Rules and Fixtures.

For members who are going on a tour, Tiffany and Maria will inform you about the itinerary on that day itself.

Lastly, I believe your team captains have informed you all that our team colour this year is RED or BLACK! And if you have the SingSoc Tshirt, please WEAR it on that day!

So.. See you guys on Saturday and enjoy Nottingham Games!

Nottingham Games

Dear Members,

London Trip is over, so WHAT'S NEXT?

We have Nottingham Games!

This is where Singapore Societies from around the UK would form sports teams and go down to Nottingham to have some friendly competition before winter sets in. This is also a chance to meet up with your friends from around the UK.

There are trophies to be won for the top teams. The Southampton Singapore Society will be participating in various sports and games, and also will be going around Nottingham to do some sightseeing after the games end before heading back home.

For those who don't intend to join the games or sports, you can take chance to do sightseeing, a day-trip in Nottingham!

Hey Everyone!

Thank you everyone who went for London Trip! Hope you all had fun! :)

So what's next? Nottingham Games is coming up next on SATURDAY, 14 NOV!

So what is Nottingham Games?

Organised annually by the Malaysian Singaporean Society of the University of Nottingham, the Nottingham Games is known to be the largest Singaporean sporting event in the UK. For the sporty ones, this will be an excellent chance to put your sporting skills to the test, or simply just to engage in some friendly competition against fellow Singaporeans and Malaysians.

For others, you can this opportunity to go on a day trip to explore the city of Nottingham (AND support our SingSoc atheletes!). Nottingham is set within a county of outstanding natural beauty that includes Sherwood Forest, lively market towns and wonderful historic buildings. It is also home to the world's best-loved outlaw, Robin Hood.

Dear all,

To our members, thank you for signing up or renewing as a member with Singapore Society. We hope you had a great time at our Welcome Party! For those who were unable to make it for the Welcome Party, fret not, membership to the society is still open at £12 for new members and £9 for renewing members.

Coming up next, we will be organizing a day-trip to London on the 24th October 2009 (Saturday). Details of the trip are as follow:

Some have also taken up the option of attending a musical, or you can choose on going for the free-n-easy option and exploring London on your own.

We understand that there is a demonstration occuring in London on Saturday. Please be assured that we will make the necessary arrangements and do our very best to avoid and minimise any disruptions to our proposed itinerary due to the demonstration.

Besides the Welcome Party this Saturday, there is another exciting event coming up next Saturday, 24th October 2009. That would be our annual London Trip!!

We are getting feedback from everyone (via the Membership Form during the Welcome Party) on what you wish to do in London. Hence, the plans are not fixed yet, but not to worry, we will try our best to cater to each and everyone's interests.

Besides the usual sightseeing, what's special for this year's London Trip?

We are catering an option to watch the famous MUSICALS in London!

The musical ticket will cost around £22.50 (subject to changes). This is almost a 50% discount off the original price!! The options available are; LION KING, SISTER ACT, MAMA MIA, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Kindly note that if you are coming for the London Trip, it would be optional to watch the MUSICALS. Nevertheless, how can you miss out such a great deal!!

Furthermore, there is no need to worry about transport, as we will all be travelling together in a COACH. The cost would be confirmed at a later stage.

Dear Members,

Summer holidays would soon be over and the new academic year is just round the corner! We understand it's rather depressing. BUT, fret not as SingSoc has plans for a series of get-together events and activities to welcome you back in Southampton.

We will be holding our Welcome party in 17th October 2009 (Saturday). More details will be given in due time, so do look out for it and make sure you're free on that day! In addition, for members who have ordered the SingSoc tshirts from us, we will be giving them out on that day itself.

Also, the society is setting up a booth during BunFight on 30th September 2009 (Wednesday) at Jubilee Sports Hall. If you are back in Southampton and happen to be free on that day, do come by to hang around and lend us your support!

Summer Chalet

The Annual Summer Chalet, organized by Singapore Society is an annual event held over summer to gather all SingSoc members for some fun while we still have some SUN. All SingSoc Members are invited, including the alumni and graduates. Most importantly, it is the best time to introduce ourselves and extend our hospitality to the freshers for the coming academic year.

The chalet would be spread over 3 days/2 nights (checking in on Thursday, 27th August 2009), with the BBQ being held on Friday, 28th August 2009. All are welcome to stay for both nights. For SingSoc Members who are not residing in Singapore, we are looking forward to hosting you!
